TMJ Q & A

What is TMJ?

TMJ refers to any disorder affecting the temporomandibular joints in your jaw and the masticatory muscles around those joints. If you have a TMJ disorder, you may have symptoms such as:

  • Jaw pain
  • Ringing or stuffy ears
  • Chronic headaches and neck pain
  • Popping noise when moving your jaw
  • Change in teeth alignment
  • Occasional locked jaw

Jaw pain and related symptoms aren’t always TMJ, however. If you’re experiencing these symptoms, arrange an appointment at Mandana Mozayeni Orthodontics as soon as possible. The experienced team can evaluate your jaw, diagnose TMJ and other conditions, and help you find an effective treatment.

How does TMJ happen?

There are a number of possible reasons for TMJ, with one of the most common being bruxism, or teeth grinding. Bruxism can cause your joints to gradually grow misaligned, which can lead to cracked and worn teeth and other serious TMJ symptoms.

Other causes of TMJ include cartilage damage connected to arthritis and physical trauma to the jaw. In some cases, the cause of TMJ isn’t obvious.

How is TMJ treated?

The Mandana Mozayeni Orthodontics team offers personalized TMJ treatment for your needs. If you grind your teeth, a night guard can protect your teeth and prevent the jaw joints from moving out of alignment or growing distressed.

Botox® injection is another effective treatment for TMJ because it prevents your jaw muscles from over-contracting. Your expert treatment provider at Mandana Mozayeni Orthodontics injects Botox into your masticatory muscles using a fine needle. Most patients notice relief in only a day or two, with continued improvement until you see the peak results after a week. Botox in the jaw is also effective for teeth grinding.

Other TMJ solutions are also available, including other types of oral appliances. If you’re dealing with severe TMJ symptoms like major joint damage, you may eventually need surgery. But, if you get help now, you can prevent your jaw joints from further damage and avoid surgery.
