Children's Orthodontics Q & A

What are the common orthodontic problems in children?

There are several possible symptoms of orthodontic problems in children, including:

  • Losing baby teeth earlier or later than expected
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Breathing through the mouth
  • Thumb sucking
  • Crowded teeth
  • Overbite, where top teeth overlap bottom ones
  • Underbite, where bottom teeth overlap top ones
  • Open bite, where teeth don't meet with the mouth closed
  • Clicking noise when opening or closing the jaw

If your child has any of these issues, it’s important to get help before the problem develops further.

What age should my child start children’s orthodontics?

It’s best to schedule a free consultation at Mandana Mozayeni Orthodontics when your child turns 7. Although some children don’t actually need treatment at that time, it’s important to have your child evaluated while their mouth is still developing.

If your child does need interceptive treatment, or early orthodontic care, the dedicated Mandana Mozayeni Orthodontics team designs a customized treatment plan to help them enjoy straighter teeth as they grow up.

Why is interceptive treatment so important?

Early interceptive treatment is important for many reasons. It can:

  • Guide jaw growth
  • Help permanent teeth grow in straight
  • Regulate arch width
  • Open up space for overcrowded teeth
  • Correct thumb sucking with oral appliances
  • Improve minor speech issues
  • Prevent tooth loss later in life

Of course, many adults didn’t get interceptive treatment as children. If you’re among that group, don’t worry. You can still get adult orthodontics. But, it generally takes longer to correct orthodontic issues if you don’t start until your jaw’s already set in place.

How long does children’s orthodontic treatment take?

It’s unique to the child. Some children need two-phase treatment, in which phase one guides jaw development and balance, and phase two typically includes top and bottom braces. Between these two phases, there’s a resting period of up to a few years while waiting for all adult teeth to come in.

Some children need only braces without phase one treatment. Braces wear usually lasts 6-30 months, with an average of 22 months, but everyone is different. Retainer wear after braces is always recommended to help your child maintain results, too.

The more closely that your child adheres to proper orthodontic care guidelines, the better their chance of completing treatment in as little time as possible.
